Building Healthy Relationships with this magic ratio

All healthy relationships (professional, romantic, platonic, etc.) follow a very simple but powerful ratio.

Building healthy relationships takes a lot of effort. But by following a very simple yet powerful ratio you can build healthy relationships that last.

Building healthy relationships comes down to a balance between positive and negative interactions. The difference between happy and unhappy couples is the balance between positive and negative interactions during conflict.

The magic ratio that makes love last

That “magic ratio” is 5 to 1. This means that for every negative interaction during conflict, a stable and happy marriage has five (or more) positive interactions.

This comes from John Gottmann, one of the more respected experts in the field of marital stability. He famously predicted which couples would divorce with 90% accuracy by using this 5:1 ratio.

These interactions do not need to be anything big of cumbersome.Very simple interactions count towards the ratio such as a head-shake or a well timed eye roll.

So the next time you are frustrated with your parter, friend, or coworker, think of the 5:1 ratio and try to force yourself to do something thoughtful or nice for the individual you are conflicting with.
