Making tough decisions is never easy and can be stressful. Below are four tips that can help when facing those tough decisions in your life or at work.
All of these tips are backed by neuroscience to help you make the right decision. They only take a few minutes to do and can help you regain a sense of calm and mental clarity.
Take a 15 minute timeout
Almost every decision, big or small, can accommodate a 15 minute delay. So if it’s a work decision that needs to be made simply ask for a 15 minute break. A quick break can help to clear your mind and can even boost your energy and productivity.
Do 60 seconds of vigorous exercise
Even just 60 seconds of exercise can help ease your stress levels and counteract your fight or flight response.
Control your breath
Slowly breath in counting to 5 and then slowly breath out counting to 5. Repeat this 5 to 10 times. This process of controlling and focusing on your breath can help bring down your heart rate and also calm your mind.
Set aside a few minutes to process your decision
Your 15 minutes are not up just yet so take a few minutes to process your decision. If you have a good friend or colleague you typically talk to before a big decision see if you can talk to them for a bit. You could also make a list of pros and cons to think through, research the topic more online, etc. Whatever you use to help make decisions or works best for you.
Whichever method you choose you will be working with a more focused and calm mind to make sure you are thinking as clearly as possible to make the best decision.
